How Much Does a Tractor Cost? New and Used Prices by Horsepower and Type

Key takeaways

How much does a tractor cost? Manufacturer price pages read on November 7, 2026 list new sub-compact models near $13,000 and 115-horsepower cab tractors near $86,000, and used dealer listings asked $12,900 to $419,900.

  • Horsepower sets the class, and two 34.9-horsepower tractors still list $5,614 apart.
  • Hours move a used price harder than the model year does.
  • A loader, a bucket and each implement are separate lines on the order.
  • Four Kubota models above 100 horsepower print “refer to dealer” where the price would go.

Two tractors rated 34.9 horsepower list $5,614 apart. The Kioti CK3520 is $24,265 and the Kubota LX3520 is $29,879, both from the makers’ own price pages. Same horsepower. Different price tags. That gap is why the question “how much does a tractor cost?” has no single answer, because the number depends on the class, the options, and whether the machine is new.

So we read what a buyer can check, on November 7, 2026: Kubota’s and Kioti’s price pages, a John Deere dealer’s used inventory, three closed state-surplus auctions, and three county purchase records from 2026. Everything below is an asking price, a list price, or a public purchase price. None of it is a quote for your machine. Yours will differ.

We finance equipment, so keep that in mind as you read. If you’d rather see how a purchase gets paid for once you’ve picked a tractor, our page on tractor financing covers it. This guide is about price. Only price.

New Tractor Cost by Horsepower Class

Sellers sort tractors by horsepower, though each draws the lines a little differently. Sub-compact and compact models, up to about 40 horsepower, handle mowing and loader work on small acreage. Utility tractors run to roughly 100 horsepower. Row-crop and four-wheel-drive machines sit above that and pull tillage and planting tools across hundreds of acres.

Kubota and Kioti print a base-model price beside each tractor on their U.S. sites, so the table below comes from those pages. We looked for the same from John Deere, Mahindra, LS, Massey Ferguson, Case IH, New Holland, and TYM. No price we could read. Cab versions, loaders and options sit on top of every figure.

Class Tractor Horsepower Listed price
Sub-compact Kubota BX1880 16.6 $12,798
Sub-compact Kioti CS2510H 24.5 $15,766
Compact Kubota L3302 33 $23,791
Compact Kioti CK3520 34.9 $24,265
Compact Kubota LX3520 34.9 $29,879
Utility Kubota M6060 66.4 $43,018
Utility Kioti RX7320P 73 $37,884
Utility Kubota M4-071 72.1 $61,724
Utility Kubota M5-091 92.5 $78,563
Large utility Kioti HX1151 Cab 115.3 $85,967
Large utility Kubota M6-101 104.5 $109,390
Large utility Kioti HX1402 Cab 140.1 $117,284

Divide each price by its horsepower and the answers run from about $519 to about $1,047 a horsepower, a spread of better than two to one. So much for a rule of thumb. The Kioti RX7320P and the Kubota M4-071, at 73 and 72.1 horsepower, list $23,840 apart.

The gap shows plainest on cabs. Kioti’s CS2530H page prices the 24.5-horsepower tractor at $18,257 without a cab and $26,849 with the factory cab, a difference of $8,592 for a cab with heat and air conditioning. Same horsepower, $8,592 more.

Neither maker’s pages itemize what separates one listed price from the next, so get the configuration behind each number in writing before you set two of them side by side. Both makers also post promotions beside these prices, and none of those is counted in the table.

What Public Buyers Paid in 2026

Counties and towns publish what they pay, which makes their resolutions and agenda packets a record of real transactions where a dealer listing is only an ask. Three 2026 examples follow, and two of them cover more than the tractor.

Buyer Purchase Date Price
Ashtabula County, Ohio 2026 John Deere 1025R, snow blower, pallet fork February 10, 2026 $37,207.83 after a $3,000 trade-in
Oconee County, South Carolina 2026 Kubota M7060HDC12, loader, bucket, cutter, and finish mower April 21, 2026 $80,596.42 with tax
Webster County, Iowa John Deere 6140M June 3, 2026 $157,800.63

Ashtabula County’s Resolution No. 2026-99 approves a 2026 John Deere 1025R with a snow blower and a pallet fork for a total of $37,207.83, a figure that already subtracts a $3,000 trade-in on a 2004 John Deere X575. Oconee’s $80,596.42 is the staff recommendation on its April 21, 2026 agenda, and the packet shows no vote. Webster’s supervisors approved theirs.

Ashtabula bought under an Ohio State Purchasing contract and Oconee under Sourcewell contracts 082923-KBA and 032525-LPI, which are purchasing vehicles for government buyers. A private buyer works from the dealer’s own quote instead, so a contract price is a reference point. It isn’t a promise about yours.

Loaders and Implements Add Up

The tractor is rarely the whole order. Oconee County’s April 2026 packet lists its entire purchase line by line, which lets us price a tractor, a loader, a bucket, a cutter, and a finish mower one at a time.

Utility tractor towing a rotary cutter across a hay field at midday
Line MSRP Contract price
Kubota M7060HDC12 tractor $59,990.00 $46,792.20
Front loader $7,063.00 $5,509.14
72-inch bucket $3,225.00 $2,515.50
Land Pride 96-inch rotary cutter $8,610.00 $6,457.50
Land Pride 90-inch finish mower $9,366.00 $7,024.50

Per the packet, the Kubota contract takes 22% off MSRP and the Land Pride contract takes 25% off list. Lines the table skips include a loader valve kit at $1,051.44, a third-function valve kit for the cab at $1,196.52, and factory assembly, dealer assembly, freight, and pre-delivery inspection, which total $2,459.58, all before sales tax.

At contract prices the loader, its two valve kits, and the bucket came to $10,272.60. The tractor itself was $46,792.20 of an $80,596.42 order. In that order the mower and the cutter each listed for more than the loader.

Neither Kubota’s nor Kioti’s tractor pages print a price for a loader, rotary cutter, tiller, or box blade. For smaller machines, one online attachment retailer’s cutter pages listed a 60-inch rotary brush cutter at $2,470 on November 7, 2026, and its 660 three-point backhoe at $7,255.

Bigger tractors pull bigger tools. At the June 3 meeting where Webster County’s supervisors approved that John Deere 6140M, they also approved two Schulte FX-1200C mowers at $34,172.72 each, which puts one implement within about $4,400 of the asking price on the 2023 John Deere 4052M in the used table below. Get one quote with everything on it. Compare that.

Row-Crop and Four-Wheel-Drive Prices

Above about 100 horsepower, the price pages go quiet. Four Kubota models, the M5-111, M6-111, M6-131, and M6-141, show “For Competitive Pricing, Refer to Dealer” where a price would be. A large new tractor, in practice, is a quote. Not a list price.

The direction of those quotes is well documented. The tractor price index that USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service keeps stood at 100 in 2011 and 138 in 2023, as farmdoc daily at the University of Illinois charted on October 14, 2025. That’s 38% in twelve years.

Used Tractor Prices From Dealers and Auctions

Used prices come with hours attached. The hours matter. On November 7, 2026 we read used listings at Sloan Implement, a John Deere dealer with locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. Ten are in the table, and every figure is an asking price. Asking, not selling.

Class Year and model Hours Asking
Sub-compact 2016 John Deere 1025R 910 $12,900
Compact 2019 John Deere 3046R 850 $32,900
Compact 2023 John Deere 4052M 117 $38,590
Compact 2021 John Deere 3046R 150 $47,900
Utility 2013 Case IH Maxxum 110 2,208 $59,900
Row-crop 2006 John Deere 8330 5,051 $129,900
Row-crop 2023 John Deere 8R 410 1,010 $419,900
Four-wheel drive 2008 John Deere 9530 5,028 $127,900
Four-wheel drive 2020 John Deere 9520R 1,266 $277,900
Four-wheel drive 2022 John Deere 9R 590 1,140 $399,900

Look at the two 3046R compacts, both with loaders. The 2019 with 850 hours asked $32,900. The 2021 with 150 hours asked $47,900. That’s $15,000 for two model years and 700 hours.

The four-wheel-drive rows stretch it. The 2008 9530 with 5,028 hours asked $127,900, the 2020 9520R with 1,266 hours asked $277,900, and the 2022 9R 590 with 1,140 hours asked $399,900. Both move the price.

Auctions show the floor. Three Illinois state-surplus auctions we read closed in 2026. A 1996 Ford 345D tractor loader closed at $5,755 on July 30, a John Deere 6300 listed as parts only closed at $5,575 on August 14, and a 2002 John Deere 6420 with a boom flail mower closed at $12,050 on June 8. Cheap for a reason.

That last listing is worth reading in full. It says the tractor appears to be in poor condition and that its hour meter was replaced at 1,231, so the dash reads 1,044 while the tractor has about 2,275 hours. A meter that says 1,044 is telling less than half the story.

So read the meter against the paperwork, and check for liens before you pay anyone. A UCC lien search through the seller’s state filing office shows whether a lender already has a claim on the machine. Run it whoever’s selling. Our page on used equipment financing covers how a used machine gets financed.

How Much Value a Tractor Keeps

Iowa State University Extension’s Ag Decision Maker publication A3-29, updated in March 2026, estimates what a tractor is worth as a share of its new list price. The percentages come from published used-equipment auction values and assume average condition, so they describe a class of tractors and not yours. The table assumes 400 hours of use a year.

Age 30 to 79 hp 80 to 149 hp 150+ hp
1 year 60% 68% 67%
5 years 43% 49% 45%
10 years 32% 37% 32%
15 years 25% 29% 23%

Year one hurts most. It takes 32 to 40 points of list price off the top, and years two and three take five to eight points each, so by year three the tractors in the table have lost 43% to 51%. Iowa State’s rule of thumb is a 15-year economic life for a tractor, unless you know you’ll trade sooner. Set an asking price next to the hours and the year. Alone, it means little.

What Hours Cost After the Sale

Hours cost money twice, once in the price and again in the repair bill. The same Iowa State publication tracks accumulated repair costs as a share of a tractor’s new list price. Its description of the pattern is plain: repair costs are “low early in the life of a machine, but increase rapidly as the machine accumulates more hours of operation.”

Accumulated hours Two-wheel drive Four-wheel drive
1,000 1% 0%
3,000 6% 3%
5,000 18% 8%
8,000 45% 19%
10,000 70% 30%

The curve bends late. Those are averages built from historical repair data, not a forecast for one machine. Set them beside the listings above anyway. The 2008 9530, a four-wheel-drive tractor at 5,028 hours, sits right on the table’s 8% line, while a two-wheel-drive tractor at the same hours is at 18% and still climbing.

Reading a Tractor Quote

Before you compare two quotes, make them the same quote. Same scope. Same lines.

  • Which horsepower? Engine and power-take-off (PTO) horsepower aren’t the same number, and the PTO figure is the lower one.
  • Open station or cab, and whether the cab has heat and air.
  • Two-wheel drive, front-wheel assist, or four-wheel drive.
  • The loader, the bucket, and the valve kit that runs them. In Oconee’s order those were separate lines.
  • Each implement, with set-up and delivery.
  • Freight, assembly, pre-delivery inspection, and sales tax.
  • On a used tractor, what the hour meter has been through.

Then put the totals side by side. The tractor line alone misleads.

Paying for a Tractor

We finance equipment, so weigh this section knowing that. Price comes first and payment second. Some buyers pay cash, or use a credit line they already have. Both are fair answers.

Financing a tractor works like financing other equipment. The machine is the collateral. A lender files a UCC-1 financing statement against that specific tractor, which is why the lien search above matters. Our page on how financing a tractor works covers loans and leases, used and private-party purchases, and the loaders and implements that go with them.

The Section 179 election is made on IRS Form 4562, and the property must have been acquired by purchase. Whether a particular tractor qualifies, and what the deduction is worth to your business, is a tax question. Consult your tax advisor before you count on it.

Only a few weeks of work a year? Rent it. Or hire it done. A tractor that runs every season is a different math problem: what it’s likely to be worth in five years, set against what renting would have cost, using the value table above.

Questions Buyers Ask About Tractor Prices

So what does a compact tractor cost new?

On the makers’ price pages we read, base prices for sub-compact and compact tractors run $12,798 for a 16.6-horsepower Kubota BX1880 and $29,879 for a 34.9-horsepower Kubota LX3520.

Add the cab, the loader and delivery. One 2026 county order priced a Kubota loader at $5,509.14 on its own.

Is a used tractor really cheaper once you count the hours?

Often. Hours decide it, though. At one dealer a 2021 John Deere 3046R with 150 hours asked $47,900, while a 2019 with 850 hours asked $32,900.

Look at the meter. Then read the listing’s own text. One state-surplus tractor showed 1,044 hours on a replaced meter and had about 2,275 in all.

What’s the average price of a tractor?

There isn’t a useful one. New tractors that print a price in the table above run $12,798 to $117,284, and used asking prices reached $419,900, so any average hides the class you’d actually buy.

How long should a tractor stay in the fleet before it’s replaced?

Fifteen years. That’s Iowa State’s rule of thumb for a tractor’s economic life, unless the owner knows a trade is coming sooner. At 400 hours a year, the same publication puts a 15-year-old tractor at 23% to 29% of its new list price.

How much do a loader and a cutter add to the bill?

Sometimes the implement costs more than the loader. In one 2026 county order the loader listed at $7,063, a 96-inch rotary cutter at $8,610, and a 90-inch finish mower at $9,366, all before contract discounts.

Can a tractor from a private seller be financed?

A lender’s paperwork follows the machine, not the seller. Whether the tractor comes from a dealer or a private owner, the lien is filed against that specific tractor, which is why a UCC lien search comes first.

Next Steps

Price is the first half of the decision, and paying for it is the second. See our page on loans and leases for tractors, read our guide to farm equipment financing, or start an application once you’ve found the machine. We’ve priced a skid steer and a backhoe loader from dated sources the same way.
